SUMMARY:Street Tree TLC
DESCRIPTION:Join us to provide the street trees lining our neighbourhood with tender loving care. \nWe meet at 7.30am and usually finish by 9am. Please bring a shovel or small pick to dig up grass around the tree\, gloves\, hat and water bottle. Email Monika at thegapsustainability@gmail.com for this week’s location. \nYou may have noticed that many street trees have been damaged by mowers or wiper snippers. Armed with shovels\, mulch\, and a shared commitment to preserve our urban greenery\, we are on a mission to provide some much-needed TLC to these vital green assets. Did you know that each street tree that the Council plants costs $800? This includes the tree\, planting\, and maintenance for one year. After that year the tree is on its own\, and this is where the problems often begin. The grass grows close to its trunk and when the mowers or wiper snippers come around\, the tree trunk is often damages. Once the trunk is damaged\, the tree often cannot grow healthily anymore\, experiences stunted growth and after a struggle often dies. The unintended consequences of such practices mean disaster for the health and longevity of these trees\, setting them on a path to a slow and certain demise. We carefully remove the grass around the tree trunks and apply a generous layer of mulch\, to create a protective barrier against future damage while nourishing the soil and promoting root health.

SUMMARY:Volunteering with Paten Park Native Nursery
DESCRIPTION:Volunteering can be done any day and time during the nursery opening hours. Please email or phone the nursery directly to organise your first time.  \nPaten Park Native Nursery is a not-for-profit community organisation whose objective is the propagation and promotion of the indigenous plants of SE Qld. This is achieved through providing educational and training opportunities for individuals and community groups. Although the nursery has a paid skeleton staff (Manager\, Production Team\, and office support)\, it could not operate without the contingent of volunteers who perform a variety of essential tasks. \nVolunteers are encouraged to participate in all aspects of plant production. Many go on to specialise in tasks that they are most comfortable in performing. They learn about the myriad of plant species and their place in their ecosystems through\, for example\, \n\nseed collection and processing\ntechniques in seed germination and growing from cuttings\npotting on young plants\nweeding\nrecycling pots\npreparing plant orders\ncustomer relationships.\n\nOpportunities abound for fund-raising ventures (e.g. bush food jam and cake making) running environmentally-based workshops for children and adults\, writing articles and developing material for our Web and Facebook Pages. With the volunteers already here\, you are sure to expand your social contacts and make new friends. \nIf these activities appeal to you and you wish to participate in a diverse community bound by commonality of purpose\, PPNN will appreciate your contribution of whatever time you can spare (a half-day to several days a week) in whatever capacity. Do not hesitate to contact us personally\, by phone or email.

Email Monika at thegapsustainability@gmail.com for this week location.
