Toss it? No way! Bring your broken items along and expert repairers will help you fix it!
The service is free, but you may need to purchase parts, and tips will be gratefully received!
Visit Repair Cafe The Gap website for more information and to access the booking system.
Here’s what to expect on the day!
If you haven’t booked: when you arrive, you’ll be given a copy of the House Rules, which you’ll need to read and agree to by signing. On the back, you’ll find a registration form to fill in about your broken item. If you have booked, we will have your form filled out ready for you to sign.
Here’s a link to the House Rules, if you’d like to get a head start: https://www.repaircafe.org/en/house-rules/
Only one item per person will be fixed at a time. You can bring more, but will need to rejoin the end of the queue for subsequent items.
Last registration will be at 11.30am
There may be some triage involved to work out which repairer can help you. Once that repairer is available, you’ll be called in.
While you wait, check out what’s on offer at the kitchen cafe. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and a variety of treats will be available to purchase for $2 per item (to help us pay the rent and insurance).</p
Don’t forget to chat to other waiting visitors! Repair cafes are all about community, so get to know your neighbours!
When it’s your turn, a volunteer will show you to the repair station with your item, where you will help the repairer fix it! Repair cafes aim to share the knowledge, so that even more things can be repaired.
If your item is fixed, we’ll take a photo to record the moment – say “Fixed!”
If your item can’t be fixed on the day, your repairer will advise you of your options. You may need to purchase parts and come back, or it may be a job for a professional repairer.
Some items will be beyond repair. At least you’ll know for sure.
Your repairer will complete the rego form to record the outcome.
All items, fixed or not, must be taken away with you. We are not a donation point and have no storage space. If you no longer want your repaired item, we suggest you gift it yourself on your local Buy Nothing group, or donate it to charity.
When you’re ready to leave, you’ll check out at the front desk and hand in your rego form for our records. If you’re happy with the service, we’ll gratefully accept a donation (to help us pay our rent and insurance)! Cash and EFTPOS are available at the front desk.
Lastly, please bring your patience and kindness. We welcome feedback and constructive criticism, but won’t tolerate any bad attitudes or abuse. We are all volunteers doing our best to help you, the community and the environment!
