Join us to provide the street trees lining our neighbourhood with tender loving care.

We meet at 7.30am and usually finish by 9am. Please bring a shovel or small pick to dig up grass around the tree, gloves, hat and water bottle. Email Monika at thegapsustainability@gmail.com for this week’s location.

You may have noticed that many street trees have been damaged by mowers or wiper snippers. Armed with shovels, mulch, and a shared commitment to preserve our urban greenery, we are on a mission to provide some much-needed TLC to these vital green assets. Did you know that each street tree that the Council plants costs $800? This includes the tree, planting, and maintenance for one year. After that year the tree is on its own, and this is where the problems often begin. The grass grows close to its trunk and when the mowers or wiper snippers come around, the tree trunk is often damages. Once the trunk is damaged, the tree often cannot grow healthily anymore, experiences stunted growth and after a struggle often dies. The unintended consequences of such practices mean disaster for the health and longevity of these trees, setting them on a path to a slow and certain demise. We carefully remove the grass around the tree trunks and apply a generous layer of mulch, to create a protective barrier against future damage while nourishing the soil and promoting root health.
